Arsenal beat Liverpool as The Champions miss out on a chance to make history

Arsenal beat Liverpool on Wednesday for the first time since April 2015 much to the surprise of many, climbing back to 9th place to keep their European dreams alive.

Liverpool came into the match as favourites but went out on the losing end. This loss also means that The Reds will not be able to beat Manchester City's record of 100 points in a single Premier League season. Beating both Chelsea and Newcastle in their remaining two fixtures would still result in The Champions falling a point short of Man City's record in the 2017/18 season with 99.

Arsenal on the other hand, grab an extremely crucial three points in their hopes for European football next season. This victory takes The Gunners two points behind Wolves and Spurs and just one point behind Sheffield United who could jump to 6th place if they beat Leicester City tonight.

Arsenal and Mikel Arteta made five changes to their lineup from the match against Spurs. Cedric Soares, Lucas Torreira, Bukayo Saka, Rob Holding and Reiss Nelson all came in for Hector Bellerin, Dani Ceballos, Pierre - Emerick Aubameyang, Shkodran Mustafi and Sead Kolasinac.

Whereas, Liverpool made just two changes to their team sheet with Trent Alexander - Arnold returning and replacing Neco Williams and Alex Oxlade - Chamberlain replacing Curtis Jones.

Sadio Mane opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Andrew Robertson played in a beautiful ball and all Mane had to do was finish it in. A calamitous and rare mistake by Virgil Van Dijk allowed Alexandre Lacazette to go round Allison and tap in an easy finish. A poor pass by Alisson proved out to be devastating as Lacazette pounced on the mistake, playing it to Reiss Nelson who placed it home into the bottom - right corner. Despite Liverpool registering a total of 8 attempts on target, they only managed to score a single goal. Arsenal, though had only two shots on target, both of them being scored.

Though it is extremely unlikely, Mikel Arteta's men may just complete their quest for European football next season.

The Gunners' remaining two games being against Watford and already relegated Norwich City, they might overtake Sheffield, Wolves and Spurs to qualify for Europa League, but again, it is extremely unlikely.
