Can we time travel ?

Ever wondered about traveling in time to see your fate, to give a perfect goodbye to your loved ones, to witness the history is happening, or just to cheat in the paper? Then you have arrived at the right place, go ahead and give this post a read.



What is time travel?


In simple words, Time Travel is considered as the movement of an object through two points in space or time using a device generally called a time machine. This concept is widely popularized due to many movies, comics, and books written upon it. Like Star Trek, back to the future, primer; although each movie has its own theory of time travel.

Please note- Time traveling is a very complex task, and if not executed with much planning and patience could result in many complex paradoxes (which are discussed later in the post)


How can we time travel?


"Indeed, we can jump forward into the future as much as we want. It's only a matter of going really, really fast," Paul Sutter, an astrophysicist at Ohio State University, told Space.com through an email.


Well, this is the most intriguing part of this post. Here are some of the most possible ways of time traveling.


1.Speed


According to the theory of general relativity, there is a possibility that if we travel faster than the speed of light (3*8^10 m/s), we could travel in the time backward.

According to Einstein’s theory of special relativity, when you travel at speeds approaching the speed of light, time slows down for you relative to the outside world. Consider the DC superhero flash for an example.

This means we need to travel at the speed of 299,792,458 m/s, the speed of the fastest spacecraft is 246960.274 km/hr, which is 68600.076 m/s which is 4000 times smaller than the requirement.

Although at the present we lack the required technologies and hopefully we could cope up with the needs in a few decades.


2.Gravity


We all know gravitational force is inversely proportional to the square of the separation distance between the two interacting objects, more separation distance will result in weaker gravitational forces. , According to the theory of general relativity, the stronger the gravity you feel, the slower time moves,interestingly the scientist have performed certain experiments to support this theory.



Gravitational time dilation has been experimentally measured using atomic clocks on airplanes. The clocks aboard the airplanes were slightly faster than clocks on the ground. The effect is significant enough that the Global Positioning System artificial satellites need to have their clocks corrected.

Additionally, time dilations due to height differences of less than one meter have been experimentally verified in the laboratory.

Please note- the difference between the clock was very minute, i.e. 1 nanosecond, it traveled 1 nanosecond into the future.


3. Blackhole


Now, one could ask, why black hole? As discussed previously we could travel in time with the help of gravity, then why not do it using the black hole?

The Black holes have infinite gravitational force. Large holes due to their large gravitational force can suck Dwarf Planets, Comets, Asteroids, Meteoroids, Stars, and Galaxies which are close to them, large black holes have such strong gravity they can destroy stars that pass too close to them, and suck in the leftover material, though this theory if applied, is possible, but can never, physically, happen in real life.


If a planet ever happened to revolve around a black hole, the time past on the black hole would be half of the time past on the planet.


For example:

A planet X revolves around the black hole,

if the time past at X was 100 years it would be just 50 years at the black hole and vice versa, and eventually the black hole would suck the planet X, so the experience isn’t worth it.


4.Wormhole

Einstein predicted that a wormhole could be the entry to another galaxy, or we could say a short to another galaxy.

A wormhole is 2 funnels connected through a tunnel-like way, all we have to do is scoop in through one funnel and we possibly enter a new galaxy.

And that is where we face the problem, the wormhole is an extremely small object. Wormholes are predicted to exist on microscopic levels, about 10–33 centimeters, which is smaller than the size of an atom which is only 10-10 meters (or 10-8 centimeters) in size.

Please note- in the movie “Avengers: Endgame”, the wormhole concept of time traveling came into use.

5. Time machine


Undoubtedly, this is the most known device through which we can time travel, but this time will look nothing like which is shown in certain movies, instead it will travel at a speed which is faster than of light(3*10^8m/s).

Unfortunately, this technology cannot be accessed at the present.

The travel through the time machine would be more like a roller coaster ride, except here the centrifugal force would be much greater which could tear your body apart while having the ride.


The spaceship which is could be seen in the image , could be the structure of the future time machine.

CAN WE TRAVEL TO THE PAST?


While the theories which indicate time traveling to the future are perfectly plausible (see the “how can we time travel” for better reference) and keeping in mind which could result in alternative timelines.

Although Many scientists are denying the possibility of traveling to the past as many would try to kill themselves which could create complex paradoxes.

Paradox:

This is one of the most important concepts of time traveling.

The time travel paradox is a paradox, an apparent contradiction, or logical contradiction associated with the idea of time and time travel.

For example:

John decides to travel back in the past, say for 5 years. Upon arriving in the past, he decides to kill off a person X whose action he found annoying at that time. Considering X whom John killed was alive at present, this creates many complex time paradoxes, or contradictions, such as:

  • How was X present when he already had been killed?


  • What will be the fate of the contributions which X made in those span of 5 years?


  • What would be the fate of John?

Because of these time paradoxes, many scientist deny the possibility of traveling to the past due to which could lead to many complex theories.

Concluding:

Coming back to the question,

Can we time travel? In the future when we have the technologies, yes! Which could either travel faster than the speed of light, either stretch the wormhole or make us fit in the wormhole or simply create large gravitational forces which could slow the time? Obviously, this is a slow process that has to be executed in steps, which could even take many more decades.
