Can we live on mars?

Now, ask yourself, what all does a living organism need to survive? And when you think, do keep in your head that here we are talking about a living organism, not a human being so make sure you stick to the very basic needs and eliminate all the extra luxury.

Now, after noting down all the points, all we have to do is, simply cross-check if all the required substances present in Mars. And here is what you need :

According to me here are the basic substances a living organism needs to survive :

The elements which need to be present in the atmosphere are :

• Oxygen, we all know it is used by the living organism for cellular respiration and breathing purposes.

• Carbon dioxide, this compound is regarded as equally important as oxygen, as this is directly used by plants to give out oxygen.

• Nitrogen, without this element, the plants would die.

• Hydrogen, this element is used in the preparation of water, which is one of the essential elements for survival.

• Optimum temperature, the maximum living organisms on earth are warm-blooded, which could not survive in extreme temperatures.

• Atmospheric pressure: This factor plays a very important role in life on this planet.

• Suitable land, probably without which survival on any planet would be impossible. This should be suitable for human habitation which includes suitability for growing plants and the construction of housing.

• Please note – These are the most minimum requirements for human survival.

Some essential elements, for example, iron, magnesium, etc. Need to be present inside the human body, which is consumed directly by food. i.e. Which directly depends upon the plants which can be grown only through a suitable land or soil.

The level of oxygen “rises relatively higher in the spring,” said Melissa G. Trainer, a research space scientist at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., and lead author of the new paper, “and then it comes down lower, below what we would expect later in the year.”

The oxygen present on Mars makes up only 0.17 % of its atmosphere, which is beyond doubt insufficient for human survival.

Although the oxygen we need can be extracted from the huge amount of carbon dioxide, using a machine like NASA’s moxie, which could provide us with breathable air.

• Carbon dioxide – This important compound though present, makes up a staggering 95.32% of the Martian atmosphere, while on the other hand, on earth, carbon dioxide makes less than a percent of the earth's atmosphere.

Because of occupying more than 95% of the atmosphere, it leaves no space for the equally important gases.

• Nitrogen, Hydrogen – while nitrogen occupies a respectable 2.6% of the total air, hydrogen is present in less than 0.001 % of the atmosphere.

• Suitable land –well this could be our first confirmed positive aspect of living on Mars.

The Martian soil though low in nutrients can be used to grow some ‘tough’ plants with the help of some suitable fertilizers. These plants could provide oxygen, fresh food, and even medicine to astronauts while living off their waste. And yes! Housing facilities can also be built on the soil.

• Optimum temperature: the average temperature on Mars is - 81 degrees F or -62 degrees Celsius. This is a planet of extremes, a summer day on Mars may get up to 70 degrees F (20 degrees C) near the equator, but at night the temperature can plummet to about minus 100 degrees F (minus 73 C).

Although the extreme conditions, the temperature can be altered by some suitable means.

If possible, how different will be life on mars different from life on earth?

You may all have noticed till now that,

You can’t just fly to mars with a couple of seeds in your hand, go on mars, sow a seed, construct a building, and live your life comfortably.

The way of living on earth would completely contrast if we compare it to the lifestyle on mars.

Housing – Recently the NASA asked the public to design a suitable house for the conditions of the mars and offered a cash prize for the same. And within days they got what they were looking for a suitable design for the house on the mars.

Though they were not perfect, they were beautiful …

TO BE NOTED - The above house is not the design of which house will be built on Mars.

Food – the food on the red planet would be nowhere close to ones on the blue one until plants grow their food, the food on your plate would be a dry piece of meat, imported from the earth, which could be even limited to each person.

Daily life – when you live on mars you could float when you are living at your Martian homes as the gravity on mars is 0.375 of the earth, and when you need the feel for a walk, you need to wear your suit at all times due to the low atmospheric pressure and high solar radiation which when directly exposed could result in the formation of cancer

Transportation – Only a limited number of people could become the citizens of the red planet, who would all be given training in advance, the duration of travel to mars could differ depending upon the position of the two planets.

How long would it take for the humans to move on the mars?

The entire process would take around a thousand years as the whole planets have to be reengineered, and has to be done in steps.

Living on mars can be a tedious task, remember on Mars, we need to learn how to walk again because of the difference of gravity between both the planets.
